About Tom Sweetland

Tom Sweetland is a dynamic director, photographer, and documentary filmmaker with a knack for authentic human-focused storytelling. He kicked off his career at the BBC, training as a self-shooting director before shifting into branded and digital content, consistently highlighting real people in his work. Tom's projects have earned spots on prestigious platforms like National Geographic, NOWNESS, and the BFI Film Festival. He's also directed impactful campaigns for clients such as Cadbury, Age UK, and Samsung.

Tom's recent passion project, "Diables," perfectly showcases his dedication to innovative storytelling. This film, blending documentary, fiction, and experimental cinema, dives into the 'Correfoc,' a traditional Catalan practice banned under Francoist Spain and revived in the 1980s. By exploring the psychology of the 'devils' who fight a symbolic battle between good and evil, "Diables" highlights Tom's deep connection to cultural and historical narratives. The film has won multiple short film awards globally and has been featured by NOWNESS.

Another standout project, "King of the Arena," follows an aspiring wrestler in Senegal and has received critical acclaim. It was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Lift Off Festival and featured by National Geographic and NOWNESS. Tom's talent for sensitively interviewing contributors and bringing their stories to life allows him to tackle sensitive subjects and foster open discussions through his films.
